Message from the President
Welcome to the Eta Sigma chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta at Chapman University! We are so thrilled you are interested in learning more about our organization and the special Theta bond that ties us together as sisters for a lifetime.
Founded in 1870 as the first Greek letter fraternity among women, Kappa Alpha Theta was created as a place for women to have the opportunity to develop themselves as scholars, leaders, and morally upstanding individuals. Eta Sigma continued these aims by colonizing at Chapman University in 2008, and has loved joining the university’s phenomenal Greek life community.
Our outstanding members are involved in countless organizations at Chapman, maintain one of the highest sorority GPAs, are consistently found in leadership roles, and care immensely about the social, intellectual, and moral development of every member. Throughout the year you can find us at our fantastic formals and date parties, supporting our national philanthropies at our annual KATwalk, participating in campus and Greek life events, as well as hanging out at amazing sisterhoods.
As Chief Executive Officer, I consider myself indescribably lucky to be able to represent this outstanding group of women. Calling these talented, beautiful, and intelligent women my sisters is truly a blessing.
Please take a look around and enjoy a glimpse into the bond of sisterhood that is the Eta Sigma Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta!
Theta Love,
Kalynne Coleman
Eta Sigma Chief Executive Officer
History
Kappa Alpha Theta was founded at Indiana Asbury University, (now DePauw University) in Greencastle, Indiana on January 27, 1870. Bettie Locke Hamilton, founder of Theta, was one of the first few women admitted to the university. Although male classmates (and even professors) made the academic environment difficult for women, Bettie Locke was a true believer in equality in education. She wanted to find friendship, support and encouragement in her academic pursuits.
After declining an offer to become a "mascot" for her brother's fraternity, she decided to start her own fraternity. She shared her idea with Alice Allen, Bettie Tipton and Hannah Fitch and together, they founded Kappa Alpha Theta- the first Greek letter Fraternity for women.
On April 20, 2008 a group of 80 women started the Eta Sigma chapter at Chapman University preserving the Theta ideals of sisterhood, scholarship, service, and leadership.
Mission:
Yesterday, today, and tomorrow, Kappa Alpha Theta exists to nurture each member throughout her college and alumnae experience, and to offer a lifelong opportunity for social, intellectual, and moral growth as she meets the higher and broader demands of mature life.
Purpose:
The intellectual ambition of the Fraternity shall be the attainment of highest scholarship. The social aim of the Fraternity shall be to exercise the widest influence of good. The moral aim of the Fraternity shall be the moral standard of love.

Scholarship
The members of Theta at Chapman strive to preserve the ideal of academic excellence by maintaining one of the highest chapter GPAs. Whether we're studying together, practicing presentations, or swapping papers to proofread, Thetas work hard each semester to earn great grades.
Eta Sigma Thetas represent every school at Chapman, and engage in many academic disciplines: from biology to political science, dance to public relations, and business to film.
We reward our sisters who receive an "A" on a test or assignment each week in our "Smartie Award" raffle and also for attending study hours with "Proactive Points"!
Each semester, we honor our sisters' high achievements at a local restaurant at our biannual Theta Scholarship Awards Dinner. All sisters are invited to this celebration, and Thetas who have earned a 3.5 or above receive special gifts!
KatWalk
On September 27th, 2011, Chapman Thetas raised over $25,000 for CASA by hosting our signature philanthropy event KATWalk. This year, we hope to surpass that astounding amount through the same event and make 2012’s KATWalk one to remember! KATWalk involves all 14 of Chapman Universities greek chapters by inviting them to partake in a friendly competition of fashion design and entertainment. In addition to the fashion show, Thetas will be selling raffle tickets and holding a silent auction with great prizes -- such as a trip to Jamaica or a chance to go see Chelsea Lately.
All the proceeds go to the Orange County chapter of Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA, http://casaoc.org/), an organization that has become a prominent leader in the fight against child abuse, and a very dear organization to the hearts of every Theta nationwide.
This year we will be bringing new and exciting additions to the table and can't wait to reveal them this fall! If you would like to donate and help give a CASA child a voice, click here.
"To give a child a CASA is to give them a voice. To give them a voice is to give them hope. And to give them hope is to give them the world."
If you would like to donate and help give a CASA child a
voice
In 1989, Kappa Alpha Theta Fraternity adopted National CASA, or Court Appointed Special Advocates, as the Fraternity’s official philanthropy. CASA volunteers are trained community volunteers who speak on behalf of abused and neglected children in the court system. Advocates provide valuable information to the judges as to what is best for the child and also help expedite the legal process so these children will still have a chance at childhood.
We work hard to support the children in our community through CASA in any way we can: holding philanthropy events to fundraise, collecting clothes and books and even making blankets to donate. Some sisters have even worked as interns for this great organization! Chapman Thetas have helped to raise $68,000 for
CASA and the Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation since our founding
in 2008!
One of our favorite ways to support our local Orange County CASA Chapter is volunteering at their annual "Celebration of Children" Gala each spring. We assisted with set up, raffles, collecting donations, and the live auction and the event
raised $600,000!
Service
Thetas have collectively donated 5,000 hours of community service in the past year! We love to help the local Orange community in
any way we can and have participated in various events over the years including:
-Friendly center
-Beach clean ups
-FIJI/Theta car wash
-Hope and Harmony Walk
-MS Walk
-Somebody Cares Soup Kitchen
-Relay for Life
-Take Back the Night
-Walk A Mile
-CASA Gowns
-CASA Gala

Recruitment
Why join our greek community?
My name is Amy Hammer and I am honored to represent my sisters of Kappa Alpha Theta this fall during recruitment! We cannot wait to open our doors to welcome the wonderful women who come through them and are excited to expand our sisterhood based on Theta love, true promises, and respect.
Recruitment is the first step towards joining Chapman’s strong and amazing Greek community and establishing life long friendships and bonds. Since joining Theta, I have met my best friends, my future bridesmaids, and above all else the women I consider to be my family away from home. Being a member of Theta has enriched my life socially, intellectually, and emotionally and I know I am a better person because of our sisterhood and the opportunities provided by the fraternity.
From sisterhood sleepovers at gymnastic gyms to sushi dates in the circle to working together for performances for Greek competitions, our times together are cherished and memorable. I personally encourage each and every undergraduate woman on Chapman’s campus to go through recruitment and find for herself the same happiness and personal growth that I have.
Feel free to explore our website, Facebook page, and Twitter to get a sneak peek into the fabulous life of a Theta. To register for recruitment, please to visit Chapman University’s Panhellenic Website.
Theta Love and Mine,
Amy Hammer
